TEAM 1 (J. BUSSEROLLES)
The team included 38 permanent members of which 24 full professors or associate professors, 1 full INSERM researcher, 13 supporting personnels and between 7 to 12 PhD students and post-docs. The main focus of the team is the improvement of the pharmacology of chronic pain. Pain is a true clinical problem occurring in many patients and in several medical specialties. Pain can differ according to the organ (somatic or visceral) and its pathophysiology (nociceptive, neurogenic and dysfunctional). Nociceptive pain, found in numerous situations, can be reduced by current pharmacological agents such as paracetamol or opioids. For several other pain syndromes, mostly chronic, it is a real challenge to help these patients and to reduce their direct and indirect cost. Indeed, the efficacy of current analgesic drugs used in these pathologies is limited (e.g. for neuropathic pain). Moreover, their benefit/risk ratio is relatively poor with a limited efficacy and/or a high incidence of adverse effects. Thus, innovation in the pain pharmacopeia is absolutely necessary.
We think that this innovation can arise from two research strategies: first by starting researches from the patient in a reverse translational manner, second by deciphering the mechanisms involved in chronic painful conditions to select relevant targets using experimental models as clinically relevant as possible. Three main research axes were developed by our team: Chronic pain in patients: toward a better characterization: Innovation in chronic pain pharmacology, Microbiota-related treatments in chronic abdominal pain.
This work benefits from a strong interaction between clinicians and basic researchers with a strong desire of valorization through several partnerships with academic and private entities. Different clinical pharmacologists are involved in the team from the Clinical Investigation Center (CIC), the CETD (Centre d’Etude et de Traitement de la Douleur) specialized in pain research, or the gastroenterology department of the University hospital, for visceral chronic pain (irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD)). We also developed frequent contacts with other clinicians in Clermont-Ferrand or elsewhere.
